Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is ranked 19th among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), according to the most recent U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings. In another facet of the distinction, ECSU ranks fifth among the Top Public Schools and number 28 in Regional Colleges South.

Washington Monthly ranks four-year institutions that award almost exclusively bachelor’s degrees and that focus on arts and sciences. To that end, ECSU placed second, among 200, in social mobility, research and promoting public service, and 12th in the Best Bang For Your Buck category within the 2023 ranking. The publication also recognized ECSU as “unheralded” though it consistently retains and graduates Pell Grant eligible students into well-paying jobs.

The rankings pose a notable, successful trajectory for ECSU, which in its fall 2023 semester experienced the highest enrollment in nine years - 2,166. According to university leadership, strategic recruitment of adult learners and graduate students is key to ECSU’s steady growth. The average GPA for the Class of 2027 is 3.28 and the group lists its top five majors as Aviation Science, Business Administration, Biology, Criminal Justice, and Kinesiology. Part of the NC Promise Tuition Plan, ECSU offers 27 bachelor’s degrees and four master’s degrees.
